Hold onto your hats, everyone -- Sony has just released a brand spanking new PlayStation 4 system update. That's right, the very latest firmware update for PS4 is ready to roll right now. While we're all distracted, waiting for PS5 to show its face, the Japanese giant has shadow dropped firmware update 7.51. Exciting times, then -- but what in the world does this latest patch do? Let's take a look at the official patch notes:
"This system software update improves system performance."
We can't contain our excitement. Here we have yet another absolute banger of a firmware update for PS4. This console might be in its twilight years, but it may just be the most stable hardware of all time. Just as with the last update, firmware 7.51 is here to make our PS4s -- and our lives -- just that little bit better. The patch is 471.4MB in size, so it won't take you too long to get this bad boy installed.

Just updated it—and a couple discs that were working just fine the day before are suddenly unreadable. Seems like this was a problem a few years ago with an older update.
The irony is that as many as there is of these "stability" related updates, the frontend UI is still incredibly unstable.
I was going to make a stability joke but I see the fun police are in today.
My 2 years old ps4 pro starts to crash after all these updates...
last year it crashed about 3 times.
this year it crashed at least once in every game I've played (Medievil R 2x, Shadow of the Colossus, Doom Eternal, Shadows Awakening 2x, Glass Masquerade 2, FF7R demo, AC Origins, WH Chaosbane, Dark Sous R, inFamous Second Son, Path of Exile 4x)
Sweet my ps4 was looking a bit wobbly, hopefully this will sort it out
This generation has demonstrated, beyond doubt, that the PS4's stay-ability is unrivalled
I just took my PS4 Pro apart to clean and replace thermal compound. Two screws left over at the end of it all, so this level of stability is now needed more than ever. Well done Sony!
Ah stability, my old friend.
Stability intensifies
Most stable console of all time lol, you got me with that one, gaga.
Oh yes the "We need to put a few little gremlins in your PS4 so it's plays like ass now"
Mhmm mhmm
So will this work and unbrick my system that 7.50 did and ruin my system and made unplayable
Inserts fanny joke about stability that hasn't been in the updates vocabulary for years.🙃
My system broke the record of crashing today. Crashed, 3 times while livestreaming RDR2 Online. After the first crash I had to unplug it from power supply. Then it installed the update and crashed two more times again.
Same happened to other people who were playing with me watching my livestream.
@philly215a You did contact Sony for a replacement system yet? I hope you made some backups over the time i need too do that too soon.
@Horizon_Rover I never had a crash only on my OG PS4.
@Severian last update did this to me. Now I tap on the top of the ps4 everytime i insert a disc. Usually works.
System performance update, excellent! Was getting bored of all those stability updates.
@Roku22 I hope your tap isn't connected to the mains water supply cos water and electricity don't mix 😂
Just heard the news today that President Trump claimed on twitter to be a "very stable genius". Not as stable as my PS4 is after the 7.51 firmware update 😂
I'm just curious how many of you actually see these updates. The only reason I know it happened is when I wake up to a notification. I don't think I've seen an update for anything on my PS4 in a few years if not longer.
I'm lost why articles about these stability updates are still being made. Such a waste of time to make an article about it.
Im pretty sure these little updates are for security, not actual performance as such.
@Roku22 lol Thanks. I managed to reinstall a game after a couple attempts and it still crashes from time to time in the middle of playing because it claims the disc can’t be read, but I hear the in game audio in the background of the blue screen...so I exit after a moment and put the system in sleep mode and go back to it after, then the game suddenly works again. Kind of hard though when doing something like a Souls game. I may have a few disc games, but now seriously thinking about making my PS4 all digital if this crap continues seeing how it is not uncommon for others too...and it all started when spotify didn’t work for me suddenly last year too.
@AJDarkstar Well, they need their clicks. Nothing is a surprise.
@Nepp67 And yet you see you have clicked the article, read it, and commented. That's why they do it. Besides, the more stability jokes the better! It's a lame joke that only gets better the more it happens! I think they are hilarious.
@invictus4000 I don't really agree that they are hilarious but you do you.
This is the sort of coverage this cutting edge issue deserves. Plaudits to you, sir.
@mikeym well if you’re not going to clean it any more, just screw it
@philly215a did you try removing the brick from it?
@Severian That's even more messed up. Hoe it doesn't get worse man. Yesterday wife saw how it was giving me trouble reading the discs. She just asked if a new one is coming out and if I wanted you want it? 🤣🤣🤣 great wife man.
still never fixed my error with trophies ot syncing with psn. when i play games it never appears under my game list on my profile and trophies can't be seen either. sometimes i will randomly get notifications about earning trophies after i already done that a while ago. i also completed some chapters in final fantasy 7 but never got trophies for completing them. i was told the only way to fix it was to delete my user profile but i don't want to have to reinstall all of my games again as that would take me a while especially the digital games. my saves should be backed up with plus so i am not too worried about that. i don't care if i get trophies for my games but i want to make sure all games play properly and all the patches that the games are supposed to have download properly. i also have a problem that sometimes when launching games it crashes to the user screen and i have to sign in again and launch my game again and hope it doesn't happen again. is there another way to fix this without having to delete my user profile?
@Roku22 Ha, well, if this is some bizarre business plan to work with ISPs for more digital purchases to profit off of bandwidth usage or getting people to upgrade to PS5 or buy a new PS4--sadly, it works. I think I am coming closer to buying most stuff digitally since I never knew there was a mandatory install for PS4, and stick to cartridges on my Switch (even if there are huge updates that are a few GB too lol).
You are a lucky man with a good wife! My gf leaves me the TV to play AC on her Switch Lite and even watches NetFlix on her phone or laptop if she sees I'm gaming on the PS4.
The last 3 updates have destroyed my ps4 slim completely. I have no expectation that this will help it either, I'm just doomed to keep reseting evrything until the ps5
@SuperstesYeti that sucks, dude. How badly has it affected yours and in what ways?
@Severian Great women man!! Yeah digital seems the way to go. Sad cause most of ps4 games are physical. Switch I'll focus on physical too. Though on my xbox almost all my games are digital 😅
@Roku22 yeah man, I was waiting for lockdown to end to go over to my game store to get a bunch of games I wasn’t able to get at the last minute before everything closed (Yakuza 1-6 and Nioh). Now I’m just going to see if the other physical games I have work and decide to go all digital while waiting for discounts...but I’ll cross my fingers in hopes that Persona 5R physical will work...
But I’ll still hold on and keep buying Switch physical games because obviously Paper Mario in July will be available after lockdown!😁
@Severian Yeah I'm too waiting for stores to reopen and check some games. Specially for the switch since it was a recent buy and I'm lacking on games. So far managed to get Astral Chain and my brother gave me Fire Emblem
@Roku22
Oh boy, be careful...I am equally addicted to my Switch as I am my PS4 (some games even more so). Once you get used to portability, bathroom breaks mean nothing anymore...
Though I already developed the habit of holding it in for hours playing Soulsborne games! 🤣
@Severian I'd bet 😅. Haven't been able to use it all that much. My kids hog the thing🤣. So I've been playing through Zero Dawn in ng+ and some Halo. Gotta go back and finish the dlc for DS3.
@Roku22 Do your digital games crash too or is it just the disc-based games? And if so, less often than the physical?
I am seriously ready to just buy a digital version of a game I already own physically if it keeps happening (Return to Arkham: Arkham City). Hoping it doesn’t happen to my Witcher 3, Horizon, and Nier Automata GOTY editions...
@Severian No crashes. Only the unrecognized disc thing. After cleaning it a bit with compressed air works better, but still have to give it a gentle tap once I put the disc in.
@AJDarkstar Fair point. Though I think it's unrealistic that all our devices will be 100% stable. Technology is great, but certainly not perfect. I feel ya. The jokes do get corny and over done. I mean they do that a lot at the end of articles with some type of joke. Hit and miss imo.
The question is: Will my PS4 crash mid update, again? Since I've owned it, it fails updates about 1 out of every 3 and forces me to restart and redo the update.
I have just downloaded the new update and it has kicked me fully off my internet I get error code PN-34924-2 I've googled it up tried everything to fix it still nothing I might have to call support this update has made my system lose control we need a patch to fix these problems 👍
Can anyone help me out on what to do?🤔
@Grizzly247 Try connecting the PS4 directly to the router with an Ethernet cable.
But what does it actually do
Super excited just like when I found out I could crayons to ***** rainbows
What does it do? Seemingly make random games start crashing. That's 3 times Yakuza 3 PS2 (Well the graphics sure as hell aren't remastered) has frozen since downloading it.
It comes with a setting to change the fan noise from very high to “Was that the door?”
PS4 Firmware v7.51 is an excellent update. Teardown of the code reveals kernel tweaks for slightly faster boot time, GPU driver updates for smoother frame rate transition, WLAN driver updates for more efficient TCP congestion algorithms and several bug fixes to patch issues with the previous firmware update. Put to the test, I can definitely tell a difference in boot time and overall game play responsiveness.
Hope this fixes constant crashes in Assassins creed Odyssey after installing a Samsung 1Tb ssd. Already got cash for Ps5.
@AJDarkstar Yes, it does require the same joke. Sony's changelogs are joke too.
There were a few times when my PS4 Pro crashes and one time even freezes on me when I tried to streamed online while suspending my game.
The UI is not as snappy as it used to be. I hope the update will fix these issues.
@mikeym The thermal compound is that poor it needs replacing after only 4 years...? oO
How stable is this stability update, lol? Will there be another stability update again?
The stability update that killed the youtube sign in. Great job sony great job.
I just buy mine already loaded on a USB Thumb Drive for me. I bought the PS4 Update File for USB Update 7.51 Here:
